The Challenge & Process

Qualtrics faced a significant challenge: how do you transform complex, enterprise-level survey creation tools into a mobile experience without sacrificing functionality? Desktop dashboards packed with data and options needed to work on small screens. Additionally, post-acquisition security requirements demanded a sophisticated mobile authentication solution.

I joined the team during an exciting growth phase and quickly became involved in multiple product areas. The mobile app became my primary focus, and I was essentially building it from scratch.

The "Magic Link" sign-in process was one of my first major challenges. Security was paramount—this wasn't a consumer app but an enterprise tool handling sensitive survey data. The authentication flow needed to be both secure and user-friendly, a difficult balance that required close collaboration with security teams.

Adapting desktop dashboards for mobile required a different mindset. I couldn't simply shrink desktop layouts—I needed to prioritize information and restructure interactions for touch interfaces and smaller screens. Working closely with engineers in Krakow, Poland, I created wireframes and mockups in Sketch (later transitioning to Figma) that guided development.

The Create UI project was different. I inherited this critical interface—the first thing users encounter when building surveys—and saw an opportunity to modernize it significantly. Whether users started from scratch or used templates, the Create UI shaped their entire experience.

I developed high-fidelity prototypes that simulated real-world survey creation scenarios. User testing became crucial—I needed to understand how people actually created surveys, not just how I thought they should. Post-testing, I meticulously documented feedback, identifying patterns that informed both immediate design iterations and longer-term product roadmap planning.

The Solution & Impact

The mobile app redesign delivered an intuitive experience that brought Qualtrics functionality to users on the go. The Magic Link authentication system balanced security requirements with user convenience—users could securely access their accounts without cumbersome password entry on mobile devices.

For mobile dashboards, I restructured information hierarchy to prioritize what users needed most frequently. Progressive disclosure patterns kept advanced features accessible without cluttering the initial view. Touch interactions felt natural, with appropriately sized tap targets and gestures that matched mobile conventions.

The upcoming "Northstar" designs will expand mobile functionality further, adding ticketing creation and maintenance features. These designs build on the foundation I established, maintaining consistency while adding capabilities users have requested.

The Create UI redesign transformed the survey creation experience. I modernized the aesthetic while improving the functional flow. Template selection became clearer, with better previews helping users choose starting points. The scratch-build process followed a more logical progression, reducing cognitive load during survey design.

The high-fidelity prototypes I created were detailed enough to guide engineering implementation closely. When the Create UI went live, it matched my prototypes remarkably well—a testament to thorough design specification and strong collaboration with the development team.

User feedback validated the redesign approach. The improved Create UI made survey creation more approachable, especially for new users, while maintaining the power features that experienced users relied on.

The impact is ongoing. My mobile designs are now in production, serving Qualtrics customers daily. The Create UI redesign continues to evolve based on the research and design foundation I established. Being part of Qualtrics during its growth phase, contributing to products that thousands of enterprise customers use, was particularly rewarding. The fidelity between my prototypes and the live implementations demonstrated the value of thorough design process and effective collaboration.

Qualtrics

Joining Qualtrics during its growth phase before the company's major expansion, I contributed to multiple high-impact areas of the product. My primary focus was transforming desktop survey creation tools into an effective mobile experience while maintaining enterprise-level functionality. I designed the mobile app nearly from scratch, including the complex "Magic Link" secure authentication system required post-acquisition. Collaborating with engineering teams in Krakow, Poland, I adapted dense desktop dashboards for mobile interfaces. Additionally, I inherited and completely redesigned the Create UI—the primary interface for survey creation—conducting rigorous user testing and creating high-fidelity prototypes that guided development and informed the product roadmap.
